CHAPTER 20

Although Jared was hurt and angered by Joe’s reaction to finding out about Gloria’s dream, both he and Gloria were determined to find some peace of mind. As the weeks passed this became easier and easier. This was partly because the public’s interest in Ella began to die down as soon as the crises in the Indian Ocean ended. For a few tense weeks it seemed that the retaliatory killing of the U.S. soldiers would result in all-out war. However, when China, the most influential member of the Trilateral Nuclear Power Alliance, took on the role of peacemaker war was averted. The American public took a collective sigh of relief and promptly forgot about the devastation caused by the blast. Those few individuals who had thought that Ella was a prophet sent to foretell the end of the world lost interest in her when the threat of all-out nuclear war waned.

The doctors who were fascinated by her condition did not lose interest but Gloria and Jared decided not to allow any further examinations or public appearances. Ella’s brief moment of fame had frightened them. They wanted nothing more than to return to anonymity even if it meant never fully understanding Ella’s condition. They knew now that she could see with her eyes closed when she wanted to. They also knew that sometimes what she saw with her eyes closed had nothing to do with what was in her visual field. They discussed this over and over again during the first few weeks after Ella’s appearance on Oprah. Finally they concluded that her visions were no different than daydreams. Being able to actually see with her eyes closed, they agreed, was unusual and due to the golden dome.

They decided not to make an issue of this with Ella. From here on in, their goal was to treat her as much as possible as a totally normal little girl. They also agreed to prohibit her from watching or listening to the news until she was older. They felt that she was highly intelligent, extremely sensitive and overly impressionable. It was their job to protect her. So they set out to do just that.

The other reason for their peace of mind was that Jared was no longer mad at Gloria. The anger he felt after Gloria told Joe and Sheila about her dreams had gradually dissipated. It was true that he would have to mend his relationship with Joe again, but he decided to let some time pass before even making an attempt at reconciliation. In the meantime he and Gloria had agreed on how to handle Ella’s differences and how to protect her. This felt good to Jared and he was relieved to be able to let go of his anger. Despite everything that had happened he loved Gloria deeply and he wanted their life together to return to what it used to be.
